Learn to Recognize The Signs of Concussion

Whether it’s caused by a sports injury or an accident during another recreational activity, concussion is a serious danger for active players. Learn to recognize the signs of concussion:

  • Dizziness or problems with balance
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Confusion, or problems with concentration or memory
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Feeling hazy, groggy or fuzzy

Protect Your Athlete From Playing Too Soon With Concussion Testing

Once a player has had a concussion, complete rest is recommended for the first 24 to 48 hours after the injury. Following that, a gradual return to activity is recommended, and OTC medications may be used to treat headache pain.

Concussion Testing

The best time to start programs for concussion is before your athlete gets one. Our ImPACT-certified physiotherapists can perform a baseline assessment to determine an athlete’s normal brain functionality. These values can then be used as a benchmark for a return to play should they experience a concussion later. If they do, we then tailor a personalized program based on the most current research to ensure the safest and most successful return to play. You’ll have:

  • A return to the playing field without worrying about lingering concussion symptoms
  • Managed concussion rehabilitation to ensure a return to optimal performance
  • Peace of mind that concussion has not caused lasting brain damage or any long-term concussion complications.

Concussion Clinic Edmonton FAQs

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or jolt to the head, leading to a range of symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, confusion, and balance issues. It affects brain function temporarily and requires proper assessment and management to ensure full recovery.

Recovery from a concussion involves physical and cognitive rest, gradually reintroducing activities as symptoms improve. The duration of recovery varies depending on the severity of the concussion and the individual’s health. Healthcare professionals provide guidance on when it’s safe to return to normal activities, including work, school, and sports.

Yes, experiencing multiple concussions can increase the risk of long-term effects, such as persistent symptoms or cognitive impairments. It’s essential to fully recover from each concussion before returning to activities that might put you at risk for another. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a potential long-term consequence of repeated head injuries, highlighting the importance of proper concussion management.

If you suspect a concussion, it’s important to stop any physical activity immediately and seek medical attention. Early assessment and intervention can help prevent worsening symptoms and guide the recovery process. Avoid activities that could lead to another head injury until a healthcare professional gives clearance to resume normal activities.
